چکیده

Meteorological data from stations around and within the Kaimai Ranges and data from temporary sites are used to characterise the climate of the ranges. Lowland climate is warm temperate with ample rainfall but the upland region is cooler, wetter and frequently enveloped in fog. Frequent fog plays an important part in the climate of upland regions. By modifying light, moisture and temperature regimes fog may be a significant determinant of plant associations and may severely restrict growth. The absence of fog during prolonged drought may accentuate plant water stresses and appears to playa significant role in the occurrence and location of forest mortality.

Vegetation Mortality in the Kaimai Ranges, North Island, New Zealand!

Areas ofvegetation mortality have been recognized in the upland forests of the Kaimai Ranges, North Island, New Zealand. The mortality is not confined to any particular vegetation type, but occurs above a critical altitude that differs at different points along the ranges. The mortality is episodic and has occurred at intervals over a period of several hundred years, with severe droughts implic...

New Zealand: dating the transition between volcanism in the Coromandel Arc and the Taupo Volcanic Zone

Subduction-related volcanism in the northern part of the North Island of New Zealand shifted abruptly during the late Pliocene. This study focuses on the transition, in time and space, from the NNW-oriented Miocene–Pliocene Coromandel Volcanic Zone to the northeast-oriented active Taupo Volcanic Zone. The volcanic rocks marking this transition are exposed in the Tauranga Basin and adjacent Kaim...

Interannual Extremes in New Zealand Precipitation Linked to Modes of Southern Hemisphere Climate Variability

Interannual extremes in New Zealand rainfall and their modulation by modes of Southern Hemisphere climate variability are examined in observations and a coupled climate model. North Island extreme dry (wet) years are characterized by locally increased (reduced) sea level pressure (SLP), cold (warm) sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the southern Tasman Sea and to the north of the island...

Beech and Conifer Community Interactions in Moawhango Ecological Region, North Island, New Zealand

Relict forests within tussock grassland and abundant subsoil charcoal indicate that prior to Polynesian conflagrations, conifer forests dominated by kaikawaka covered the upper montane plateaux in Moawhango Ecological Region. Much forest remains in peripheral districts where the plateaux border the encircling Kaimanawa, Kaweka and Ruahine greywacke uplands; in these districts, beech forest of t...

Ecological classification of southern intertidal zones of Qeshm Island, based on CMECS model

The “Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS)”, a new approach to ecological classification, was applied to 122 km of the southern intertidal zone of Qeshm Island located the Hormouz Strait - the Persian Gulf. Two components of this model, Surface Geology (SGC) and Biotic Cover (BCC) were used. Considering the extent and geomorphological alternations of the covered area, 12...
